Location: Ulwe, Panvel area, in Navi Mumbai. It’s about 37 km from South Mumbai.
Owner / Developer: Adani Airport Holdings Ltd in partnership with Maharashtra’s CIDCO. The project is under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Cost / Investment: Around ₹19,650 crore.
Key Features & Capacity of NMIA Airport
Scale & Area: Built over ~1,160 hectares land
Phase-1 Capacity: The first phase has one terminal, one runway, capable of handling about 2 crore passengers annually.
Full Capacity (Future Phases): Eventually to have 4 terminals, 2 parallel runways, handling up to 9 crore passengers/year and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo.
Design / Architecture: Terminal shape and design inspired by the lotus flower (Kamal) with modern infrastructure (lots of check-in counters, aerobridges, self baggage drop; automated and digital features).
Sustainability & Misc Features:
Solar power generation (~47 MW) planned.
Battery powered Electronic buses for local connections
Water taxi connectivity is also part of the design
Automated people mover (APM) to connect terminals in later phases.
What is happening at NMIA Airport
Inauguration Date: The airport was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 October 2025.
Start of Operations: Commercial/domestic flights are expected to begin around mid-December 2025. International flights will follow in due course.
How it will change the life of Mumbaikar
Alleviating Congestion The existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has been highly congested. NMIA will relieve that burden by sharing domestic/international traffic.
Economic Growth & Connectivity Growth in trade, tourism, and employment is expected, both locally (in Navi Mumbai region) and more broadly. Improved connectivity (road/rail/metro/water) will integrate the region more tightly with Mumbai.
Global Hub Aspirations With capacity, scale, and modern amenities, NMIA is positioned to compete with major international airports (like Heathrow, Incheon) and contribute to India’s growing aviation market.
Urban & Real Estate Development With such infrastructure, surrounding areas (Ulwe, Panvel, etc.) are likely to see increased economic activity, possibly higher land/property values, more commercial development.
